A little bit of Steve, preserved for millions of years
Musango, Steve Edwards & Fosils
If you know Steve Edwards, you’ll know that a conversation with him is rarely just a conversation. Somewhere between the cheeky humour, quick wit and endless stories, you’re bound to learn something you never knew before — usually about Kariba, its wildlife, history or some fascinating discovery Steve has managed to uncover.
With his incredible knowledge and genuine love for Lake Kariba and the Zambezi Valley, Steve has a wonderful knack for looking beyond what is immediately in front of us. His passion for the region has led to some truly fascinating discoveries, including fossil evidence of ancient lungfish found in Zimbabwe.
The fossil lungfish Ferganoceratodus edwardsi has been named in honour of Steve Edwards, owner of Musango Safari Camp, a safari guide and amateur fossil hunter in northern Zimbabwe. With Steve having played an important role in the discovery of a phytosaur, a new dinosaur and now a fish, the team of paleontologists thought it was only right to highlight his contribution and we couldn’t be prouder of him. It seems only fitting that someone with such a deep love for Kariba should have his name preserved in its prehistoric story too!
What makes it even more exciting is that fossils have also been discovered on and around Spurwing Island, adding yet another layer to the ancient story beneath the waters and landscapes we know and love today. It certainly leaves us wondering: what else is still waiting to be discovered around Kariba?
Kariba is so much more than the magnificent lake we see today. Beneath the water, along its shores and across the surrounding landscape lie stories stretching back millions of years. And with people like Steve continuing to explore, question and uncover them- preferably with a cheeky comment or two along the way- who knows what the next discovery might be?
We are incredibly proud of Steve and his contribution to telling the story of this remarkable part of Zimbabwe. Here’s to many more discoveries, plenty of laughs, and uncovering a few more of Kariba’s secrets along the way!
